Lake Safety

Water levels on the Big Rideau Lake change significantly during the season. BRLA installs and maintains Shoal Markers to ensure everyone a safe passage.

Two shoal makers together identify the extent of a shoal. Go Around, NOT Between!

If you have suggestions about ways to improve safety on the Rideau Lakes, please .

Shoal Markers

BRLA installs and maintains 104 Coast Guard Approved Shoal Markers this season. These are shown on the charts of the Rideau Canal system, identified as "Private" markers.

The seventy six markers west of Rocky Narrows are maintained by Portland contractor Lamont Brown. Nine volunteers, under the supervision of Past President Richard Bradley, attend to 28 markers east of the Rocky Narrows.
